The Aoi Festival, or Hollyhock Festival, is one of the three biggest festivals in Kyoto.

It is held on May 15 in honor of Shimo Kamo Shrine and Kami Kamo Shrine in Kyoto.

There is a procession consisting of an imperial messenger called "Saioh dai" in an ox-drawn carriage and her followers, all elegantly dressed in Heian costumes.

The Gion Festival is a month-long festival held on honor of Yamaha Shrine.

The highlight of the festival is on July 17, when elaborate floats carried by a large number of young men, are paraded through the main streets of the city.

The Jidai Festival is held on honor of Heian Shrine in Kyoto.

On October 22, there is a procession of people dressed in costumes representing various periods of Kyoto's 1200-year history as the capital of Japan.
